[OS X TeX] Redefining subsection counter

Dear Texers,

This is the premble:

\def\thesubsection{\Alpha{subsection}}

\begin{document}

It causes the following failure:
*****************************
! Undefined control sequence.
\thesubsection ->\Alpha
                         {subsection}
*****************************
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
