[OS X TeX] stmaryrd font

Along with the AMS' \oplus, \ominus, \odot, etc I wanted to use 
\ogreaterthan, \olessthan and so, as per Companion2ed, I tried to 
install the stmarydpackage.

I know where to put the .sty file but, to my great embarrassment, was 
not able to find where to put the Ustry.fd file. (This is the first time 
I have had a need for a font.)

I tried looking for other fonts alongside which to put it, e.g.

HD > Library > teTeX > share > texmf > fonts

but keep getting a message that ' … "fonts" can't be modified" '

My i-installation is about two years old (TeXShop 1.43 on 10.3.9)
