I didn't remember fmvr8x used to be the name of the metrics for
MarVoSym. Thanks for pointing this out.

Actually TeXLive-2007 includes a newer (2.1) version of the LaTeX
support package marvosym.sty, in which the metrics has been renamed
to umvs. From /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/doc/latex/marvosym/
marvodoc.tex:

\item[2006-05-11] Version 2.1: Renamed Rightarrow macro to
MVRightarrow. New TeX name for font (umvs). Rewrote style file. Added
fd file.

I don't know how come Gary is faced with a call to fmvr8x. Gary, is
it possible that you have added bits of the former version of
marvosym.sty inside ~/Library/texmf/ or /usr/local/texlive/texmf-
local/? Another possibility: a few days ago you mentioned using a
custom format; is it possible you included \usepackage{marvosym} when
creating the format, which could result in the format calling
fmvr8x.tfm while your newly updated TeXLive-2007 contains only umvs.tfm.

In case that is indeed the explanation, Gary, I think it would be
better to rebuild all formats after updating TeXLive (through
fmtutil, or through the command you used to create your custom format).

Another solution is to switch to gwTeX, which is more stable and
includes the older version of marvosym.

Hope this helps,

Bruno
