An example of a non-CTAN package that is worth using is Paul Taylor's
{diagrams}, for commutative diagrams and such. One of the best
solutions to this issue (especially after fine-tuning some
typographical options rather than using the defaults). It's not on
CTAN, and has its quirks: not really open-source (the .sty source is
unreadable, on purpose), a weird license, and time-bombed.
Nonetheless, as I said, one of the best ways of typesetting
commutative diagrams, so: whatcha gonna do?
