Put the \titleformat command inside the appendix file :

\titleformat{\chapter}[display]{\filcenter}{\bfseries\Huge\chaptertitlename\ 
\thechapter}{1pc}{}

This works.  (I had thought that these commands only work in the 
preamble, but they don't).
