Yes it is very weird. I am having the same problem.  When I switch to  
gwTeX and I type in Terminal
	texdist --current
I get
	gwTeX
If I switch to TeXLive-2006, I get
	Can't return outside a subroutine at /usr/local/bin/texdist line 195.
Maybe this bit of information can be helpful.
