Many thanks for this remark, it was useful. The original .cls file  
contained:

\RequirePackage{fancyheadings}
\setlength{\headrulewidth}{0.4pt}

After replacing fancyheadings by fancyhdr, I got an error:

> ! LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.

> See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.
> Type  H <return>  for immediate help.
> ...
>
> l.57 \setlength{\headrulewidth}{0.4pt}

Replacing \setlength by \renewcommand, the error disappeared.
