Speaking about texdist: /Library/TeX/Distributions/TeXDist- 
description.rtf mentions running it as

	texdist gwTeX "kpsewhich fmtutil.cnf"

while "texdist --usage" mentions instead running it as

	texdist --texdist=gwTeX "kpsewhich fmtutil.cnf"

And only the second form seems to work indeed:

Portable-de-Bruno:~ brunovoisin$ texdist gwTeX "kpsewhich --var- 
value=VARTEXFONTS"
Portable-de-Bruno:~ brunovoisin$ texdist --texdist=gwTeX "kpsewhich -- 
var-value=VARTEXFONTS"
/var/tmp/texfonts

Or did I misunderstand something?
