Actually that seems feasible, but you need to have an update
available (for example right now there seems to be an update of the
spelling dictionaries, at least in French).

In Adobe Reader, go to Help > Check for Updates… and then, when
prompted for authorization to install an update, don't proceed: click
on Preferences in that dialog, and change the location where the
update will be downloaded. I did change from the default:

~/Documents/Updater5

to another folder, which was already present:

~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Updater5

And now ~/Documents/Updater5 is apparently no longer recreated every
time Adobe Reader 8 is opened. I also selected to have Adobe Update
prompt the user before downloading an update, but I don' think that's
related here.

The only user space pollution left is ~/Documents/Données
Utilisateurs Microsoft, but I'm not aware of any way to make Office
(v. X or 2004) move that folder to within ~/Library instead.
