[OS X TeX] Can't get microtype.sty to work -- very frustrated

I hope not! ;-)

In addition to Gary's suggestion, might I ask you as to why you are  
running you LaTeX file in the same directory as where microtype is?  
microtype should be stowed away in the texmf-dist tree.
