You may compile them, and binaries are not updated too often

You need to remember that while gwtex was pretty complete it was not
as complete as TeXLive
and use of 2) and/or 3) was still needed for some less popular packages.
Definitely gwtech was making things easier and many started from gwtex
adding some extras later, and we should be very thankful to Gerben
for his work.
