gives additional vertical space above each table row.  Probably you  
might additionally play with

\renewcommand{\arraystretch}{<factor>}%
---

to get real convenient spacing.  Moreover, the booktabs package  
provides the \addlinespace command which adds \defaultaddspace  
vertical space in a table row.
