thanks for the pointers - here is a brief report. The \strutt command  
mentioned in this link does not seem to have a visible effect when  
placed inside a table or array. Another solution mentioned is  
\setlength{\extrarowheight}{length}, which is part of the package  
array. This works but does not center vertically the contents of the  
cell. I did not try the other packages metnioned in that link.
