[OS X TeX] TUG.org has problems. i-Installer can be extremely slow as a result.

Well, yes. This is the first time in 5 years or so that a server so let us
down.

There are a few "get stuff in the foreground and wait for results" in
i-Installer. Stuff like that is used for small things, like getting a
remote table of contents for instance. If this fails, normally one timeout
will give you the error that something has failed, e.g. when opening an
i-Package. Only "open updated" does these things in series and there was
no error message per attempt (there is a log message in the console).
There now is user feedback, so a next release (2.80) will be more
friendly.
