Thanks for the tip. I couldn't get it to work, though. First, the  
syntax was a bit weird to figure out, given that "RenderAll -> False"  
cannot be used as an option to Plot3D. Apparently, the syntax must be:

Show[Graphics3D[
   Plot3D[...],
   RenderAll -> True
   ]]

But, much worse, I tried it on one "middle-size" figure (EPS file of  
about 30 MB): Mathematica ran for about 25 minutes without returning  
any output, with the fans of my PowerBook spinning all the time; then  
everything simply froze (even the clock in the menu bar stopped being  
updated), with the fans spinning and spinning. I finally force- 
restarted the PowerBook.

All this with 1 GB RAM, and 64 MB RAM on the graphical card.
