[OS X TeX] Strategy for saving TikZ or PGF output as separate files?

Dear Friends,

After sending out the message above, I discovered that loading  
\usepackage[active,graphics,tightpage]{preview} last will produce a  
pdf containing only the graphics. I can of course split this file and  
discard the figures that were created outside the program, but it  
would be easier if I could specify a single graphic to output (i.e.,  
the one I created using TikZ)? Advice?
