[OS X TeX] R, paradigm to bring into the LaTeX world?

I was trying to make a simple point. To use an analogy inspired by  
Alain's workshop, the state of latex, as I see it,  is similar to the  
state on my desk: I can find anything I want (with some effort), but  
my secretary thinks I'm insane because it all looks like a mess to her.
