Since I don't understand a word of what you are saying here, I assume you
have not understood my point either...

The point is simply that if you change the symlink, this change affects
*all* users on the systems.  There is no such thing as a symlink valid for
one user and not for another.  Hence it is not reasonable to use the tex
switcher script on a multi-user system (unless of course you deliberately
want to impose your changes on everybody else).

Were the tex switcher to be used by a non-admin user wanting to override
the sysadmin's idiosyncrasies, or just by a user wanting to experiment 
without bothering others, it would have to perform its switch by writing
to ~/.profile and ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist
