[OS X TeX] simpdftex doesn't generate DVI files

I have just installed the new MacTeX system (to replace an existing
one done via i-installer) and now TeX+GhostScript no longer works.
Specifically, the conversion to PostScript fails with the error "DVI
file not found". When I try the command

simpdftex latex --maxpfb

at the command line, it produces a .pdf file rather than a .dvi file.
What am I doing wrong?
