OK, OK: it's obviously some incorrect use needed (as in ps):

	pete 234 /\ /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/convert -
	Usage: /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/convert [-f <input
filename>] [-o <output filename>] [-i <input mimetype>] [-j <output
mimetype>] [-P <PPD filename>] [-u] [-a <attribute string>] [-U
<username>] [-J <jobname] [-c <copies>] [-D]

/etc/cups contains the files mime.convs and mime.types that describe
what CUPS and /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/convert could do, /
etc/cups/ppd should contain the PPD files used by CUPS. The -U and -J
options only have a meaning when used in a SysV printer queue, so
they can be deleted. I don't know what [-u] or [-a <attribute
string>] could mean, they might be documented in generic CUPS usage.
What I do not is that /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/convert
wants absolute path names to work with!
