[OS X TeX] gtamacfonts ligatures: PDF searchability

I hope this isn't too basic a question for this list:

Is it possible to get PDF cut-and-paste plus searchability for the  
ligatures in the gtamacfonts?
Minimal example:

If pdfelatexed this way, no problems with the default .pfb font.  But  
if the
\usefont{gtamacbaskerville}
line is uncommented, the result is as follows:
1) copying from the PDF display window of TeXShop and pasting into  
the Search dialog box entry field in Acrobat Reader results in
Hoe
appearing there;
2) copying from the PDF displayed by Acrobat Reader and pasting into  
the entry field of the Search dialog box results in
Hoe er
appearing there.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.  I just can't get my brain  
around this one, as there seem to be more than seven-plus-or-minus- 
two variables involved, thus overchallenging what are probably  
inherent limitations on human list-processing capacity...  maybe I  
overlooked something in the list archives or in one of the manuals,  
or failed to understand its significance.

BTW, I need UTF-8 input encoding (and ucs) for the cjk package.  I've  
recently been cautiously exploring XeTeX, and also rather inexpertly  
doing a bit of hacking of OS X system fonts to type 1 format (-- 
thanks to Bruno Voisin, Bob Kerstetter and Victoria Lamburn for the  
wonderful tips they've published!--), i.e. I'm aware of what a  
transitional situation LaTeX is in at present and how difficult it  
all is, especially as most of it is being done by people in their  
spare time!

Thanks to all of you for the goldmine of information this list has  
been for me so far.
