On my machine (OS 10.4.5, Mathematica Version Number: 5.2.0.0):

In[1]:=a + 2.*x + x^2
Out[1]=\!\(a + 2.`\ x + x\^2\)

In[2]:=
TeXForm[a + 2.*x + x^2]

Out[2]//TeXForm=
x^2+\text{2.$\grave{ }$} x+a

But that's exactly what I want when I use TeXForm.
