It might work to invoke texconfig (for personal settings) or 'sudo -H  
texconfig-sys' (system wide) to change the paper size. Without  
argument you're in an interactive session. 'texconfig help' gives  
some help, leading to 'sudo -H texconfig-sys paper letter.'
