I downloaded Aquaterm but when I tried to open it, all I got was Open
Recent and when I tried Aquaterm help, nothing happened. (After I
downloaded gnuplot, it got installed, or so the installer said, but I
don't even know where.)

Since all I need is to plot a number of functions for a textbook, so
that I can't invest too much time in this, and since I thought this list
might not be appropriate for help with plotting software, I stayed with
Excel but, now I sure would appreciate some or at least a hint as to
what I did wrong.
