[OS X TeX] Overriding Default Paper Type

I think I understand the standard policy of not messing with the
standard classes, but - given that the latex project now recommends
to use pdfetex as the engine for the latex macro package - would it
be possible to introduce a change to those very same standard
classes that correct this issue? I think this will remove a great deal
of confusion.
