[OS X TeX] Overriding Default Paper Type

Hi,

I have an i-Installer installation of tetex which has US-letter size
paper as it's default paper size. I have to produce a document in A4.
If I declare A4 size in the preamble:

\documentclass[a4paper,11pt]{article}

I still get letter size output.

In order to get A4 size I have re-run the configure strict in
i-Installer, which is inconvenient.

Am I doing to something wrong such that the A4 option in the document
class declaration isn't working?

Thanks,
