[OS X TeX] "insert reference" command doesn't work

The "insert reference" command is handy, but in the past couple of
months it has stopped working. TeXShop thinks for a bit and then
presents a modal alert saying

AppleScript Error
TeXShop got an error: AppleEvent timed out.

Any idea what could be wrong?
