I recommend lilypond (http://lilypond.org/web/). I played with  
musixtex a bit and found it overly complex. Lilypond is easier to  
use, it is under active development and available on all major  
platforms.

BTW, musixtex can be installed via i-installer (TeX Support: MusixTex).
