[OS X TeX] metapost vs metapost

The TeXShop format for metapost commands seems different than
the metapost format as given in Hobby's manual.
For example, in TeXShop,

\curve  {(-1,-.5),(0,0),(1,-.2)}

whereas the metapost manual says that

\draw  (-1,-.5)..(0,0)..(1,-.2)

would produce a curve, and it does not. Is there any reason
for this, and how does one find a list of commands for
TeXShop's version of metapost?
