I think Preview does not support transparency in PDF. When you open a
transparent PNG image, for example, it shows the background in gray, and
when you save it as GIF, there is a checkbox for preserving the alpha
channel, and the GIF will be transparent too. But when you save as PDF, it
looses the transparency, and the background becomes white.
