[OS X TeX] What is the ``right place'' for map files ?

I am trying to install the improved font metrics for Utopia and
Utopia Expert, by Walter Schmidt.
The last operation is adding the content of a file named putx.map to
general map files.
The installation instructions say :
==================================================
With "classical" TeX systems such as teTeX, fpTeX, MikTeX or
emTeX/TDS, copy putx.map to the directory
texmf/dvips/config. (NB: The location of font map files
may change in future; consult the documentation of your TeX
system!)
===============================================
In fact, I have tried
/usr/local/tetTeX/share/texmf.localdvips/config
and many other locations, as
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/map/dvips/utopia/
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/map/dvips/adobe/utopia/
etc.
The result, is always the same :

Either put this file into the right place or remove the

to disable unavailable map files is to call
updmap --syncwithtrees
For manual editing, call
updmap --edit

So, what is the ``right place'' alluded to by updmap ?
Thanks for any help,
