I find that in my script if I use dvips -R0 -o $1.ps $1.dvi it works fine.

If I try to go directly to pdf using dvipdf -R0 $1 there is no
difference.

Is there a way to put in the "-R0" argument to dvipdf? (I can always do
dvipdf followed by ps2pdf that seems to give equivalent results, but do I
have to?)

I still say that if dvi... does not find a graphics file, it should not
continue but should quit with an error message.
