[OS X TeX] Sending the same input to latex, htlatex and pdflatex

Hello everyone,
I recently moved (back) to Mac OS. On Solaris, I used to be
able to send the same document to latex,htlatex and pdflatex.
I was isolating the statements specific to pdflatex using something
like this:
\ifx\pdfoutput\undefined
\usepackage[dvips]{hyperref}
\else
\usepackage[pdftex,colorlinks]{hyperref}
\pdfcatalog{ /PageMode /UseNone }
\fi
However, using TeX on Mac OS (either the version installed using fink
or the one installed using i-installer), I can only run successfully
latex and pdflatex on those documents. In the case of htlatex,
no .dvi file is produced and it fails to produce the HTML file.
What is likely to be the cause of this?
How can I circumvent this? How to detect that htlatex is
running?
Thank you so much for your help!
Marcel
