There is a tool in the ghostscript suite that normalises postscript  
code: eps2eps (and an equivalent ps2ps). I just tested it on a file  
that epstopdf doesn't handle correctly, and it resolves the issue. I  
guess that translation should only be used in files that have the  
(atend) issue.
