And yet another one: a few years ago I was at Cambridge University
(UK) when someone sent the announcement for a humanitarian event to a
list (an alias) of university mailing lists (scuba-diving club,
caving club, etc.). Then members of these lists, feeling upset at the
unsollicitated message, started expressing concern or requested
unsubscription. However, most of them sent the unsubscription request
to the list of lists, only adding insult to injury. This quickly
degenerated into shouting abuse. Finally the university had to block
all lists temporarily, and took strict measures afterwards IIRC
towards the person having originally created the list alias (ie the
list of lists) even if the intention had been laudable (ie
publicizing a humanitarian event).

The fun of academic life -- though not as fun as in David Lodge's
books, certainly!
