Perhaps you're running XeTeX rather than standard pdfTeX? If that's  
the case, you can select fonts using Will Robertson's fontspec.sty,  
rather than the traditional \usepackage{times} or similar; something  
along the lines of:

	\usepackage{fontspec}
	\defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}
	\setromanfont{Times Roman}

should be all it takes to get started.
