Howdy,

But isn't that the behavior you want for all the users on the system?  
In those few cases where there might really be a problem with  
overwriting (not that many things loaded there by the TeX i-package  
--- mostly things by other packages) put them into the personal tree,  
~/Library/texmf/; not going to be too much duplication there.
