If I'm not completely mistaken, you're wrong. MikTeX isn't a GUI but
a TeX distribution, comparable to what Gerben does with his i-
installer packages.
TeXnic Center is a graphical fronted similar to TeXShop. AFAIK it's
even more Word-like, though I can't really comment on it since I
haven't used it.
As for a replacement for BibDesk (which doesn't exist, of course).
JabRef is Java and runs on many systems.
