[OS X TeX] question about fontspec/manually installing packages

The latter place requires 'sudo -H texhash' to be useful for all  
users, in the first case only *you* have access to the file(s).

It depends on the search path for this component. In most cases the  
files in the texmf.local tree would be found first, before  
texmf.gwtex. The complete search path for (La)TeX components begins  
with . (the current working directory), then the remainder of your  
own files is searched, then follows the system.

By reading parts of the files to get their versions and documented  
dependencies?
