Then TeX hasn't been installed correctly. You should have, at least:

$ echo $PATH
/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/ 
powerpc-apple-darwin-current

/usr/local/teTeX/ is where TeX lives, and /usr/local/ is where  
GhostScript (among other stuff) lives.

Did you install all required i-Packages using i-Installer, as  
described at <http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/installing.html>?  
TeXShop is essentially a front-end, and it requires these other  
software to run.
