I think that a good tool to do calculations with arbitrarily long
arithmeric is PARI/GP (which is GPL).

http://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/

It is essentially a set of liibraries (that can be used in C)
and has  also a front-end mode that can be used as
mathematica or maple.
