Howdy,

I also have that in that file but I also have a pdftexconfig.tex in  
texmf.local that does not contain that line. Does pdftex pick the  
first one it finds in the search path? When installing TeX I picked  
letter paper size and that might be why that file was created. I  
assume you used the default a4 paper; maybe the installer doesn't  
produce the texmf.local version under those conditions.
