Shouldn't that be '\input fontinst.sty' with a '\'? Then your file  
should compile with Plain TeX. Without the '\' tex will typeset  
'input fontinst.sty' and then complain that \latinfamily is an  
undefined control sequence.

All control sequences need a '\'!
