It hasn't.

In the past few years the following things have occurred:

  - psnfss has been greatly updated and improved, affording the naive 
user the packages:
    - mathptmx
    - mathpazo
    - helvet
    - avant
    - courier
    - chancery
    - bookman
    - newcent
    - utopia
    - charter
    as well as Fourier and Euler and Computer Modern Super and Latin 
Modern &c.

  - fontinst has matured and become much more capable and to document it 
one has

  - Philipp Lehman has made available his wonderful Font Installation 
Guide which I can't praise highly enough.

  - and as an alternative for Plain TeX users there's ``OFS'' Olsak's 
Font System which is quite interesting (and also has a LaTeX 
implementation).

and that's just what's available for _everyone_ for ``free''.

Mac OS X users also get Jonathan Kew's wonderful XeTeX and Will 
Robertson's Fontspec, and there are a lot more commercial math font 
packages available (MathTime Professional is especially nice).
