[OS X TeX] XeTeX and unicode characters

Thanks for the hint, Herb and Jonathan.
When I comment out "\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}" the unicode error 
messages disappear from the console. However, the unicode characters 
nevertheless do not appear on the pdf output.
