[OS X TeX] colorbox

I am puzzled by the way 2x=7 is typeset:

  \documentclass[11pt]{book}
                \usepackage{color}      
                \usepackage{amsmath}
    \begin{document}

        \begin{equation*}
            \colorbox{yellow}{2x=7}
        \end{equation*}

        \begin{center}
            \colorbox{yellow}{$3x=7$}
        \end{center}

   \end{document}

3x=7  shows that colorbox does not hate math.
Interchanging the order of the packages makes no difference.

The only place where colorbox is mentioned in Companion 2ed is on page 
158.
