This did the trick. Thank you.

For anyone else experimenting with xyling in Texshop, I had to remember 
to change the "typesetting" preference to pdftex from 
latex+ghostscript.

Also, I wasn't able to get results typesetting from the command line in 
X11. My document has a very simple tree drawn using the xyling \Tree 
command, and the line would not appear. I tried this with the latex, 
pdftex, and xelatex commands. It works ok with Texshop however. That 
suggests that there's something about how I have tetex (Fink-installed) 
in X11 that is insisting on using ghostscript. I'm not sure how to get 
around that. Any suggestions?
