[OS X TeX] Error message - Unable to read an entire line

Using texlive 2004, I am trying process a paper in which the 
illustrations are tif files. This seems to choke TeX, giving an error:

Unable to read an entire line---bufsize=200000.
Please increase buf_size in texmf.cnf.

However, I cant find a bufsize=200000 line.

Even if I put in a bufsize=20000000 line (much bigger) I still get the 
same problem. (or buf_size=20000000).

Any suggestions?
