I didn't really "want an error popping up every time [I] compile" but I
didn't think having to hit "r enter" was worth bothering anyone on the
list either. But since you were kind enough to "insist", I took a closer
look and it has to do with … the table of contents being mixed up with
pdfsync.

1. First, even though it is probably irrelevant, I am using the
askinclude package. I thus have a subfile which gets called by
\include{01MoneyOn}.
The subfile's first line is
\chapter[Money \emph{On} the Counter]{Accounting for Money \emph{On} the
Counter}

2. I open the main file, then press Typeset. Askinclude asks what file I
want. I type
01MoneyOn followed by Enter
Normally, this should typeset the subfile 01MoneyOn.
Instead, the console says

[2](./Mainfile.toc
!Missing control sequence inserted
<inserted text>
\inaccessible
…rder by 1\relax }\emph {On} the Counter}{5}

(I am afraid I failed to report both the first line which I had not
noticed and the last which I had but did not understand.)

3. I started all over again but with * instead of 01MoneyOn to typeset
the whole book and, sure enough, the chapter titles in the toc look like
Money p 816 6636830 43701122 On the Counter 5
(with On in italics as it should).

The chapter heading, though, is how it should be and the page number, 5,
is correct.

4. I looked up mainfile.toc and found stuff like

\contentsline {chapter}{\numberline {1}Money {\relax \pdfsavepos
\immediate \write \PDFPOS {l 817 2}\edef {p 816 9979166 6420104}{{p 817
6636830 43701122}}\write \PDFPOS {p 816 9979166 6420104}\global \advance
\PDFSYNC at rder by 1\relax }\emph {On} the Counter}{5}

So, I trashed mainfile.doc, trashed mainfile.aux for good measure, and
started again. No change and the reconstructed .toc has the same
PDFSYNC at rder by 1\relax stuff.

Grateful regards

P. S. "goto error" gets me to the second line of mainfile:
% begin PREAMBLE
