[OS X TeX] box in forms

I don't know what's with me or with my system but:

  test  \framebox[10mm]{\parbox[l][20mm][c]{0mm}{5}} text

gives me a box 10 mm wide by 20 mm high with the 5 just right of center.

When I change 0mm to 50mm, the box does not change but the 5 goes clear
out of the box, left of test, about 25 mm (sic!) left of the box's
center. Negative numbers, though, do not let 5 go any further right than
with 0 mm. This is why I wrote that I did not understand "the rule".

By the way, Companion 2ed, page 863, gives

    \parbox[box]{width}{text}

Not that any of it matters as the above really does just what I needed
and I don't mind a bit of trial and error. I was just curious.

Grateful regards
